The Widow Blakely

Gun Barrel

My latest project under construction. This cannon was used by the confederate soldiers in 1863 in the defense of Vicksburg, Miss. It was named "The Widow Blakely", because it was the only Blakely cannon the confederate owned. It actually is a 7.44" Blakely Rifled Gun manufactured in England.

 Gun Carriage

Wood in the gun carriage is walnut. Once it is complete , I will sandblast all the parts , which will give it that vintage finish. Then an oil finish.

Note: carriage used in model, is that of the original gun placement used in the defense of  Vicksburg.

At the back of the cannon, the screw jack for the elevation control of the gun in place. The muzzle end, shows the wheels in place and the bore is now in place. The carriage is also assembled with wood glue and bolts. The traverse wheels are also in place.
